Tom Kenny Done Voicing SpongeBob Will Be Replaced With Real Sponge

Coming hot of the heels of actors Jenny Slate and Kristen Bell announcement on Wednesday that they will no longer be voicing biracial cartoon characters in the shows “Big Mouth” and “Central Park,” Tom Kenny will no longer voice the cartoon sponge know as SpongeBob SquarePants.

Kenny released a statement on the decision earlier in the day. Kenny said he originally reasoned that he could voice the role of SpongeBob because the character's parents were brown sea sponges just like Kenny's real life parents.

“But ‘SpongeBob’ is also a yellow house sponge, and yellow house sponge characters on an animated show should be played by yellow sponges,” Kenny continued. “I acknowledge how my original reasoning is flawed, that it existed as an example of human privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal human supremacy, and that in me playing ‘SpongeBob,’ I was engaging in an act of erasure of sponge culture.”

Nickelodeon has also released a statement in support of Kenny saying "Kenny is both stunning and brave to vacate the role and allow the character of SpongeBob SquarePants to be voiced by a real yellow sponge. We fully support this decision and will begin sponge auditions post haste."

No word, as of yet, if Bill Fagerbakke will step down and offer his role to a real starfish.
