Found footage monster movie Cloverfield will finally get its sequel. The follow-up titled 10 Cloverfield Lane is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the man behind the Portal fan film No Escape.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” Abrams revealed to Collider last night, after the trailer unexpectedly appeared online.

Trachtenberg had been announced as shooting a low-budget post-apocalyptic thriller for Abrams' production company Bad Robot back in 2014. It's only now - with the movie shot and ready for release - we know it will be the long-rumored Cloverfield follow-up.

The movie's post-apocalyptic storyline follows a group of three living in an underground bunker. In the bunker are stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. The story revolves around a woman (Winstead) who wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept by a stranger, played by Goodman.

Trachtenberg was previously set to helm a movie version of graphic novel series Y: The Last Man, a job he got based on the quality of his Portal fan film. However, Y ended up canned and the director took on 10 Cloverfield Lane instead.

10 Cloverfield Lane is set to hit theaters on March 11, 2016.
