Most people seem to think the "Proto-Alien" looked stupid or unreal. But I think it turned out decent. No it Doesn't look as good or as cool as the Alien that we all know. But I don't think it needs to. I have found myself leaning towards the group that thinks this is not a "proto-xeno" but is and entirely new creature in all.
Yes, it has similarities to the classic xeno, but they may not be the same and most likely have little to do with each other. Also, we should assume that the xeno from the end of the film is still a "baby.",like a chestburster grows into an adult xeno, this thing too will grow into an adult too. Jockey-Xeno, or whatever you want to call it. It is an interesting creature and I hope that we get to see more of it's life in the sequel or maybe a meeting of the two different xeno's and see what their interaction would be.

I guess this xeno is updates, almost a 2.0 version of the original Alien, despite it was born narratively first. For me this new alien is disturbing as the first or even more. I was waiting for an Alien 5 a long time or for an Alien Prequel, so I want to feel this as one of the two. Congratulations for your article :)
